A Singer’s Guide to Hayfever Solutions

As a singer, the hayfever months can feel challenging, to put it mildly!

Here are some self-care tips designed to help.

  • Wear a mask whenever possible

  • Use a de-humidifier at home, especially in the bedroom

  • Wash your hands often, especially coming indoors, and try not to touch your face

  • Keep very WELL HYDRATED. Drink water little and often throughout the day

  • Try a saline nasal spray

  • Electro-acupuncture can help

Other rememdies/medications

  • Haymax around the nostrils and mouth

  • Pirinase Piriton spray

  • Pollinosan by A.Vogel

Talk to your Pharmacist/GP for further medications. I suggest you try these ones first, as they seem to be the least dehydrating, and have good anecdotal evidence from singers.

  • Flixonase - a mild steroid available over the counter. Start taking 1 month before hayfever season

  • Fexofenadine

Hayfever symptoms (rhinitis, itchy eyes, post-nasal drip, hoarseness, scratchy throat) are NOT always signs of a hayfever allergic reaction. They might be related to a gut imbalance or inflammation, menopausal histamine intolerance, hormonal imbalance or food intolerance. Consider working with a Nutritional Therapist to get to the root cause of your symptoms.
